THE CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF HUMAN RIGHTS, THE HARRIMAN INSTITUE AND THE
INSTITUTE ON EAST CENTRAL EUROPE AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY IN THE CITY OF NEW
YORK TOGETHER WITH THE HUMAN RIGHTS CENTER AND THE RESEARCH CENTER ON JEWISH
HISTORY AND CULTURE IN POLAND AT JAGIELLONIAN UNIVERSITY IN KRAKOW, POLAND
WILL SPONSOR A CONFERENCE FROM MARCH 15-18, 1998 IN KRAKOW ON RELIGION,
RIGHTS AND PUBLIC POLICY:  EUROPEAN AND NORTH AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES.

The organizers seek papers within the following topic areas:

1) Relgion and Contemporary Theories of Social Order
2) The Protection and Rights of Religious Minorities
3) State Regulation and the Rights of Old and New Religious Organizations
4) Restitution and Reconciliation:  The Role of the State in Property and
Other Disputes
5) Religious Advocacy, Proselytism and Tolerance:  Alternative Responses
6) Educating for Tolerance

The conference will include workshops on advocacy and education.  Persons
interested in presenting papers at the conference should submit abstracts of
500 words by October 15, 1997 to Dr. Elizabeth Cole, Coordinator, Center for
