It is planned to hold a BAAL/CUP Seminar in June 2001.
 
Theme:  Minority Languages in Europe: Frameworks - Status - Prospects
(A Pan-European comparative multidisciplinary project)
Venue:          University of Bristol

As a follow-up to the publication 'National Varieties of German
outside Germany. A European Perspective' (ed. G. Hogan-Brun,
forthcoming 2000, Peter Lang), contributors to the volume (Stephen
Barbour, Stefan Wolff, Karen Margrethe Pedersen, Judith Broadbridge,
Gabrielle Hogan-Brun) are planning to hold a workshop to discuss
issues arising from the book.
 
The following themes have been suggested:
 
1. Nationalism in former Yugoslawia, minority-majority relations in
Serbia, Bosnia and Macedonia, international intervention in Kosovo and
Bosnia, political system of the Yugoslav successor countries.

2. Minority rights and conflict prevention/resolution in multinational
settings.

3. The differing vitality of minority languages in Europe in relation
to their salience for ethnic and national identity.

4. How have different legislative and political frameworks influenced
the prospects of a minority language to survive/to be revived as a
daily communication instrument? A comparative study of post-1945
Eastern/Western Europe.

5. Emerging status of minority languages as a result of migrations in
Europe (post 1945 to present).

6. Unity in diversity or diversity in unity? Assessing the dynamics of
a balanced linguistic ecology for a successfully integrated Europe.

contribution.
 
The number of participants will be limited to about 20 people.
