Romani language summer courses in Romania

NATIONAL SUMMER COURSES OF ROMANI LANGUAGE IN ROMANIA

The first National Summer Courses of Romani Language (organised by
the Romanian Ministry of National Education (MEN) for teachers of
Rroma who teach Romani language 4 hours a week) was held last year in
Satu Mare. This year the second edition took place in Calimanesti
between 31 July - 16 August 2000. The training of qualified and
unqualified Rroma teachers to be able to teach Rroma students is one
of the ten strategic programmes initiated by MEN for the education of
the Rroma in the last two years. The courses were taught by three
trainers: one professor and one student from the University of
Bucharest, and one teacher from Timis county.

The courses were sponsored by the Ministry of National Education, the
embassies of the United Kingdom and of France in Bucharest, with the
assistance of the Romani CRISS Organisation.

Out of the 47 trainees, 41 were Rroma and 6 non-Rroma teachers. The
trainees were grouped in different levels (advanced and beginner
groups). The afternoon activities of the participants included
learning traditional Rroma songs, and getting familiar with education
programmes of MEN for Rroma children and youths.

The courses ended with an examination to certify the teachers as
competent users of the Romani language in the classroom.

The participants reiterated the joint call of Rroma and non-Rroma
teachers, as well as of the "Save the Children" Organisation for the
Government of Romania to provide the legislative framework for the
authorized bodies to allocate the necessary funding for one daily meal
for each nursery and primary school Rroma and non-Rroma student, in
order to reduce the drop-out rate.
