NATMINET: The European Parliament of the Roma

August 3rd, 2000 - At the 5th World Congress of the Gypsies, which
took place in Prague between 25th-28th July, King of the Roma from
Romania Florin Cioaba was elected vice-president of the Congress. King
Cioaba declared that he insisted that the European Parliament of the
Roma be established under the coordination of the King. Cioaba pointed
out that approximately 30 delegates from the European countries
represented in Prague showed their interest to become members of the
European Parliament of the Roma.

King Cioaba declared that the new European forum would analyze the
situation of the Roma population in each country and would collaborate
directly with the Parliament of Europe. The main issues of this
collaboration would concern discrimination and the social problems of
the ethnic group. King Cioaba stated: "Our parliament will fight
against racial discrimination in Kosova, where the Roma are prevented
by the Albanians from returning to their cities, and under the
circumstances we will militate for the Roma to have a town of their
own. We will also try to standardize the Romani language at
international level, and this will also be the official language in
the Parliament." The European Parliament of the Roma has in its
composition a CRIS commission (the Court of the Roma), which also
includes the Emperor of the Roma from Romania Iulian Radulescu. The
elected president of the World Congress of the Gypsies is Emil Stiuca,
leader of the Roma from the Czech Republic.
