ACC pressrelease: Intercultural dialogue within non-formal
adult education

Press-release/conclusion from the conference "Visions for Europe and
European democracy. Intercultural dialogue within non-formal adult
education"

ACC (Association for Community Colleges) concludes:

Enthusiasm derives from 100 young Europeans, representing NGOs and
almost all European states:
"Make the Danish-Nordic folk high school format a model for the
development of European community colleges. This was the outcome of
three intense days of conference, which took place at the Hojskolen
Ostersoen in Aabenraa, Denmark, from 26th-28th of July. Unity in
diversity and active citizenship were the headlines of the discussions
that took place, when the conference developed this vision.

At the same time there was though scepticism when it comes to
implementing this vision. Especially among representatives of the
countries where the folk high schools system does not exist the way it
exists in the Nordic countries. In many states the lack of
understanding of non-formal educational system confirmed the opinion
that in the years to come the civil NGO-sector has an enormous task to
fulfil. This particularly appears, when it comes to the development of
a European citizenship, of a common European dialogue, avoidance of
social exclusion during the European integration phase, creation of
possibilities for it, and the desire to be involved in the process of
debating and solving common questions.

Folk high schools / community colleges are non-formal adult education
institutions organized as boarding schools.

The conference "Visions for Europe and European democracy.
Intercultural dialogue within non-formal education" was arranged by
the Danish Folk High School Association (FFD), Hjskolen stersen and
Association for Community Colleges (ACC).
