Call for papers: Islam and Human Rights in Post-communist
Europe


The Center for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University, the
Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, the New University of Bulgaria and the
International Center for Minority Studies and Intercultural Relations
(Sofia) will sponsor a conference on March 15-17, 1999 in Sofia,
Bulgaria on:
 
ISLAM AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN POST-COMMUNIST EUROPE
 
Call for Papers
 
The organizers seek papers within the following general topics:

1) Poltical, social and legal perspectives:  Islam and pluralism;
Islam and the state; Islam and rights theory

2) The contemporary situation:  Christianity, Islam, ethnicity and
rights in Western and Eastern Europe and Central Asia.  Topics may
include studies of:
European countries with new Muslim minorities, ie, Western Europe;
European countries traditionally having Muslim minorities, ie, Russia
and the Balkan countries;
Non-Muslim minorities in European countries with Muslim majorities,
ie, Central Asia and Azerbaijan, as well as Turkey

3) Diversity within Islam:  Tradition and New Islamic Movements
 
4) Religion, Rights and New Conflicts in Post-Communist Eastern
Europe, with special attention to Chechnya,  Bosnia and Kosovo
 
5) Religious freedom and tolerance:  theological perspectives from the
Abrahamic faiths (ie, Judaism, Christianity and Islam)
 
Case studies may focus on Russia, Turkey, the former Yugoslavia,
Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, the Caucasus and Central Asia, Spain,
France or other western European countries.
 
We are looking for contributions particularly from scholars (legal,
religious, regional, etc.) and activists in the region involved in
conflict resolution and prevention, and human rights monitoring.
 
The language of the conference and the papers will be English.
 
Persons interested in presenting papers at the conference should
submit abstracts of about 500 words by November 1, 1998, to:
