Human Rights in Latvia, January 1, 2000 - June 30, 2000

The Latvian Center for Human Rights and Ethnic Studies, a member of
the International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights, has just
published an overview of human rights in Latvia covering the first six
months of 2000. The issues covered include: severe delays within the
judicial system, misconduct by police officers, the massive increase
in prisoners being held before trial, the failure to ratify and
implement important minority rights standards, progressive changes in
the status of non-citizens, an overview of extremist activities and
official responses, war crimes cases, and new developments affecting
the rights of women, children, refugees and the mentally ill.
