Azerbaijan: association of minority organizations established

(Translated from Russian by MINELRES)

AGAINST SEPARATISM AND FOR CIVIL RIGHTS OF NATIONAL MINORITIES is
Azerbaijani Home

I.Rzaev

Yesterday the next meeting of the forum "Azerbaijani Home" (AH), a
union of the country's national minorities' organizations, was held in
the headquarters of ANK HGA [apparently, abbreviation for Helsinki
Citizens' Assembly]. As the chairperson of ANK HGA Arzu Abdullaeva
told "Echo", "AH" was created and has been functioning since June this
year. Agreement with the goals and tasks of this organization is the
main condition for membership in "AH". This is why its doors are open
for everybody. "AH" will be financed by grants.

More then ten national minorities' organizations of the country are on
the registration list of the meeting's participants (Lezgin cultural
centre "Samur", association of Meskhetian Turks "Vatan", etc.). As the
participants speeches showed, the main problems for "AH" are
legitimization of the new organization, and possible non-acceptance of
"AH" by a part of the country's public.

For exanple, according to Abdullaeva, the same day a group of members
of SDPA, supporters of Araz Alizadeh visited ANK HGA office and
accused the human rights activist [Abdullaeva] in "provoking
inter-ethnic discord". The conflict was fortunately settled, but "AH"
cannot exclude possibility of other protests on the part of
governmental structures. Nevertheless, "AH" is ready for dialogue. It
is planned that the state adviser on ethnic policies Idayat Orudzhev
will be invited to one of the next meetings.
