Yesterday, 20 jul 1999, arrived in the port of Brindisi (southern
Italy) a boat with 541 Roma from Kosovo (208 children, 149 men and 184
women). The boat had leaved the Montenegro coast and reached the
italian port accompanied by the italian military forces. The day
before had arrived other 762 roma refugees from Kosovo.
The italian government decided yesterday that because of the end of
the "official conflict" in Kosovo no more refugees will be accepted in
Italy, and all those who in theese days reached the italian soil from
Kosovo must be councidered as illegal immigrants to be expelled back
in their Country of origin.
All the roma in Brindisi and Bari described the serious mistreatments
that they had suffered in Kosovo: their houses have been burnt, their
lives menaced.
Once more the roma people is damaged from war and not recognized as
victim of the war from the civilized world.

Helsinki / FINNLAND (Reuters) July the 22nd, 1999
Central and East European countries trying to join the European Union
must take action to end discrimination of their Gypsy minorities,
Finnish Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen said on Wednesday.
"A look at the living conditions of the 12 million Roma living on our
continent reveals a disturbingly common pattern across Eastern and
Central Europe," Lipponen said in the text of a speech to a meeting of
European parliamentarians.
"It is up to the governments to take the issue seriously and stop the
discrimination of Roma," he said.
Finland holds the rotating EU presidency, and the issue of EU
enlargement is set to figure prominently at the EU summit in Helsinki
in December.
Lipponen said Roma were discriminated in education, housing, health
care and employment in Eastern Europe and that official neglect was
compounded by popular prejudice.
Discussions between representatives of Europe's Roma and governments
should be on the agenda of the additional summit of EU leaders in
Finland in October, he said.
The EU is conducting formal membership talks with the Czech Republic,
Estonia, Hungary, Poland and Slovenia. Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania,
Romania and Slovakia are also vying for entry.
Finland is among the top advocates of the expansion, but it has also
warned some of the aspirants that their human rights record must
improve.
The issue came up again just as Finland took over the six-month
presidency in July, as hundreds of Roma poured into Helsinki
complaining of poor living conditions and discrimination in Slovakia.
Finland imposed visas for Slovak nationals on July 6 after accepting
Slovakia's assurances it was working to improve living conditions of
its Roma population and that they were economic rather than political
refugees.

ROMA HISTORY AND MUSIC AT THE MUSEUM OF JEWISH HERITAGE

The Museum of Jewish Heritage - A Living Memorial to the Holocaust in
Battery Park City will present two events celebrating Roma "Gypsy"
history and culture this August.
On Thursday, August 5 at 6 p.m., the Museum will host a history
discussion with Larry Otway and George Kaslov, both of the Lawyers'
Committee for Roma Rights, and Julian Radulescu, from the Romani Union
Immigration Office and a relative of Roma Holocaust survivors.
On Sunday, August 8 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Cosmo's Gypsies will
perform traditional Roma music including Hungarian, Romanian, and
Russian songs in the third floor Special Exhibitions Gallery.
Both events are co-sponsored by the Lawyers' Committee for Roma Rights
and Recognition and are free with Museum admission, which is $7 for
adults and $5 for students and seniors.
The Museum of Jewish Heritage is located on the waterfront of Battery
Park City at 18 First Place in Manhattan. The Museum's core
exhibition is organized around three themes: Jewish Life a Century
Ago, The War Against the Jews, and Jewish Renewal. With more than
2,000 photographs, 800 artifacts, and 24 original documentary films on
display, the Museum uses personal stories and artifacts to present
20th century Jewish history and the Holocaust in a context of
universal truths that speak to people of all ages and backgrounds.
Summer Museum hours through September 3 are Sunday through Wednesday 9
a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and the eve of
Jewish holidays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Museum is closed on Saturday and
Jewish
holidays.
