Errata in the World Directory of Minorities

A letter to the editors of the World Directory of Minorities

Dear Sirs/Madams,

I have just found some mistakes in the article on Meskhetians in the
World Directory of Minorities (p. 310). It's a pity: I like your
Directory very much and have always considered it the best source of
information.

It says: "Meskhetians (est. 30,000) ... are Shi'i Muslims." But they
are Sunni Muslims, and their number is estimated as 300,000 (the
figure in the book is just a misprint).

The last but one sentence goes: "Two organisations were formed by
Meskhetians in 1991, Vatan ("Homeland") and Salvation." In fact,
their Committee for Return evolved into the Vatan Society in 1990. As
to Salvation, strange as it may seem to British people, none of
Meskhetians uses its English name: they use the Georgian name "Khsna"
instead (the organisation consists of those who declare themselves
ethnic Georgians).

I have worked with Meskhetians since 1989. Besides, you can verify my
words by consulting, say, Mr. Bohdan Nahaylo.

Respectfully yours,

Emil Adelkhanov-Steinberg,
