COLUMBIA LAW SCHOOL
OFFICE ASSISTANT (12 Month Temporary Position)
GRADE 5
PUBLIC INTEREST LAW INITIATIVE
 
Reporting to the Director of the Public Interest Law Initiative, the
Office Assistant will provide general administrative support to the
Director as well as the other staff members, as needed.  This position
is very task oriented and the incumbent will be expected to work under
close supervision.
 
The Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) was launched by Columbia Law
School in September 1997 with the support of the Ford Foundation. The
goal of the Initiative is to assist in the development of a strong
network of public interest law centers in Central and Eastern Europe
and the former Soviet Union.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
1. Provides administrative support to the Director and, as needed,
other staff members.  This includes scheduling meetings, arranging
extensive travel itineraries and the submission of corresponding
expense vouchers to ensure timely reimbursement.
2. Assists with correspondence preparation and tracking.
3. Maintains database of international and domestic contacts.
4. Organizes and maintains office files and research files.
5. Serves as the liaison with the Department of Information Technology
and other various vendors with regard to technical equipment. Reports
all computer,  printer, copier and telephone related problems and
coordinates the scheduling of any needed repairs.
6. Assists with the coordination, layout and printing process of
publication projects.  This involves the use of desk-top publishing
software as well as interfacing closely with the PILI Web Master.
7. Answers telephones, takes messages and greets visitors.
8. Distributes mail, orders office supplies and performs other various
office duties as needed.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
 
High School diploma or the equivalent required.  Some college
preferred.  One year of relevant work experience necessary.  Incumbent
must have strong administrative, computer, writing and interpersonal
skills.  A desire to work as part of an efficient and effective team
that is focused on assisting legal clinics, human rights and
environmental advocacy groups, and other public interest law
institutions in post-communist countries is highly desirable.

Excellent attention to detail and ability to execute multiple tasks in
a short- deadline environment is required.  Copy-editing experience,
desktop publishing experience and relevant foreign languages are
desirable.  Salary in the low to mid $20's.
