ERRC Position Announcement: Program Director


The European Roma Rights Center (ERRC), an international public
interest law organisation which monitors the human rights situation of
Roma and provides legal defence in cases of human rights abuse, seeks
a Program Director for its Budapest headquarters office. Reporting
directly to the Executive Director, this new position is a key
component of the executive management team that oversees this twenty
person plus non-profit. The Program Director is responsible for all
research, communications, education, and intergovernmental advocacy
functions.

A dynamic organisation that has grown quickly in the past five years,
the ERRC needs an energetic and proactive senior manager to chart the
strategic direction, co-ordinate the multiple activities, and enhance
the overall effectiveness of its programs. The Program Director will
assume control of an existing eight person program staff, currently
providing field monitoring and research, publications and press
releases, Internet and library information, educational training and
internships, and international institutional advocacy. The chosen
candidate is expected, in consultation with key members of the board
and staff, to forge a coherent agenda and action plan, to be executed
through the integrated efforts of the program team.

Qualifications: Minimum ten years of practical experience managing
civil rights, civil liberties, and/or international human rights
programs. Expertise supervising the following: investigative missions
and monitoring; research collection and dissemination; report
preparation and publishing; curriculum development and implementation;
international advocacy targeting the European Union, the Council of
Europe, the OSCE, and the United Nations. Experience with Central and
Eastern European non-governmental organisations is desirable. Seek a
disciplined, strategic thinker with a pragmatic, result-oriented
approach to the issues of minority rights. Seek a manager willing to
seize opportunities and to initiate projects, often working under
pressure and juggling multiple tasks. Seek a mature and confident
individual with a collegial and collaborative style.

English oral and written fluency is required, familiarity with one or
more Central and Eastern European languages is desirable.
Communications, writing, and editing skills are of utmost importance.
