German-Ukrainians to protest against toughening immigration
rule

German-Ukrainians will protest against toughening immigration rules

Compiled by kpnews staff

KYIV, June 26 - The Wiedergeburt (Revival) society, whose membership
is comprised of Ukrainian citizens with German roots, has told
Interfax-Ukraine of plans to hold a rally outside the German Embassy
in Kyiv on June 27. The protest will call attention to recent acts by
the German government that have complicated the procedure for ethnic
Germans to immigrate.

In the event that they do not receive desired results, the society has
warned that on June 28 Germans across Ukraine will rally together 'in
protest against Germany's increasingly stiffened policy of asylum to
the Germans of Ukraine and the former USSR, deported and repressed
through the fault of Germany itself.'

On May 19 of this year there were protests by approximately 50
Ukrainian citizens outside the embassy. The action was timed for the
visit of German government commissioner for re-settlers' affairs
Johann Welt.

Albert Wurster, Deputy Chairman of the committee of the Wiedergeburt
society told Interfax-Ukraine that requests of 120 Ukrainian citizens
of German ethnicity to return to Germany have been refused.

A formal petition has been launched by the society, which demands
recognition for Germans who can prove their nationality of ancestors
and that the period of examining ethnic Germans' applications for
citizenship be reduced.
