Query: Latgalian people of Latvia

Dear people of Minelres.

I've read some contradictory information about the Latgalian people of
Latvia. I'd like to learn about them more. Is their language only a
dialect of Latvian or could it be considered as an independent
language? How many Latgalians are there in Latvia? Is there any
regional or ethnical vindication? Is the Catholic Church and the
religion a form of identity in Latgalia? I've read similar things
about Lithuanians. Could the Samogitians be considered as an ethnic
group? Is the Sudovian language still spoken?

Thank you in advance!
