Azerbaijan accedes to the Framework Convention


Azerbaijan accedes to the Council of Europe Framework Convention for
the Protection of National Minorities.

STRASBOURG, 26.06.2000 - Azerbaijan today acceded to the Framework
Convention for the Protection of National Minorities. Vilayat Guliyev,
Minister for Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, handed the instruments of
accession of the text to Council of Europe Secretary General Walter
Schwimmer.

The Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities
[ETS 157] Opened for signature on 1 February 1995, this text is the
first legally binding multilateral instrument for the protection of
national minorities. It is already in force in Albania, Austria,
Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia,
Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania
(01.07.2000), Malta, Moldova, Norway, Romania, Russia, San Marino,
Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, "the former Yugoslav
Republic of Macedonia", Ukraine, the United Kingdom as well as Armenia
and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It has also been signed by Georgia,
Greece, Iceland, Latvia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland and
Portugal. It will enter into force for Azerbaijan on 1st October 2000.
