THE LANGUAGE COUNCIL IS BEING ESTABLISHED TO CONTROL THE USAGE OF
AZERI LANGUAGE

Baku, 23 June, MPA. "Knowledge of the state language by state
officials is mandatory", was said yesterday (22 June) at the sitting
of the Parliamentary Committe on Culture during the discussion of the
draft law "On usage and protection of the Azeri language". As pointed
out in the document, the Azeri language - the state language of the
Republic of Azerbaijan, is used also by small nations and ethnic
groups residing in Azerbaijan as a tool for communication. The draft
envisages also freedom to use other languages. To control usage of the
Azeri language, a public Language Council will be created, which will
include linguists, writers and journalists. The draft law contains 4
chapters and 17 articles. The committee decided to submit the draft
for consideration by Milli-Mejlis.
