Forum Institute: Opening of the International Library on
Ethnic Minority Issues

Dear Friends,

The Forum Institute (Slovak Republic) is gladly informs you about the
opening of the International Library on Ethnic Minority Issues which
will be open to the public from 21 July 2001.

The mission of the library is to provide a professional background
for the sudy of national minorities for those interested in Slovakia
and abroad. This way, the library would like to rationalize the
dialog between the majority and the minorities.

In Slovakia there is not only a lack of Slovak publications in this
field, but it is also hard to have access to international
literature. To make up for the want of such library the Forum
Institute established the International Library on Ethnic Minority
Issues.

Activities of the library:

1. Library of handbooks, specialised and theoretical literature

This traditional library enables anyone to study the basic
international literature of the given field. Several foreign experts
participated in the listing of the library's literature to be bought.
The mentioned literature is as follows:

a. specialised literature, books, monographs, encyclopedias etc.,

b. international documents related to the question of national
minorities,

c. constitutions, laws, orders, court cases and judgements, other
laws, that are related to the question of national minorities.

In getting its new accessions, the library co-operates with the
foreign embassies in Bratislava and with other Slovak and foreign
Institutions.

The library is also in close co-operation with the International
Library of Human Rights of the Helsinki Committee in Slovakia.

Today, there are approximately 1,000 books, documents, and periodicals
in the collection of the library.

1. Virtual library on the Internet

At the moment, the library's web site is being put through a test. The
site will enable its users to search the net quickly for specialised
literature. Needless to say, the advantage of the site will be its
accessibility from anywhere.

2. Minority research and publications

This part consists of research and survey of different models for the
solution of minority problems. These present the culture of national
minorities for those interested in it in Slovakia and abroad.

Best wishes,

Silvia Bekõ
