The Open Society Institute is a private operating and grantmaking
foundation that promotes the development of open societies around the
world. OSI is part of an informal network of more than 30 autonomous
nonprofit foundations and other organizations created and funded by
philanthropist George Soros in Central and Eastern Europe, the former
Soviet Union, Guatemala, Haiti, and South Africa, as well as in the
United States. In the United States, programs have been developed in
the areas of criminal justice, drug policy, immigration, and death and
dying, and new initiatives are under way in the areas of education and
youth development, reproductive health and rights, media and
journalism and professional ethics in law and medicine.
 
Working under the supervision of the Director of the Regional Office
for Russia, the Program Assistant will provide general administrative
support, track department budget and financial expenditures, become
familiar with entire foundation network in order to act as first point
of contact and source of information for all outside inquiries, and
will specifically:
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Answer all department mail and phone inquiries, directing queries to
the appropriate offices and/or programs;

* Maintain existing database of responses to inquiries;

* Meet as needed with representatives of organizations interested in
foundation-funded activities in Russia;

* Maintain effective filing system for all department documents;

* Handle all travel arrangements for Director and coordinate
itinerary;

* Arrange and keep track of daily appointments and meetings for
Director;

* Handle all local travel/accommodation arrangements and coordinate
schedules for visitors from Russian foundation;

* Prepare and direct any payments to Accounting Department for
processing;

* Keep track of department budget and make any necessary adjustments
to budget;

* Assist Director with correspondence, including proofreading/editing,
faxing and telephoning;

* Translate documents and correspondence from Russian to English;

* Assist Director with any special projects that may be assigned;

* Assist when needed with administration of specific programs
coordinated by other members of the department staff;

* Maintain employee data records for department staff;
 
REQUIREMENTS:

* Bachelor's degree;

* Fluent English and proficiency in Russian;

* Extensive computer skills and high comfort level with computers
(expertise with Microsoft Word and Excel required; experience with
databases and the Internet preferred);

* Superior interpersonal, written and organizational skills and
ability to compose effective, thoughtful correspondence;

* Ability to effectively manage several simultaneous projects in a
fast-paced environment;

* Knowledge of prevalent world climate and general political
awareness;

* Pleasant, diplomatic manner and disposition in interacting with
senior management, co-workers and the general public;

* Integrity and professional discretion.
 
Salary:  Commensurate with experience with full benefits + 4 weeks
vacation
