Romani College Student Beaten Up by Police

Budapest / Hungary (RPC Budapest) June the 10th, 1999

The Foundation for Romani Civil Rights filed a lawsuit against unknown
police officers who beat up László Sárközi, a young Romani college
student yesterday in one of the parks of Budapest and then in the
city's 10th district police station.

According to László Sárközi, he was walking home on Wednesday around
4. P.M. from the People's Park when a white car stopped next to him.
Three policemen not wearing uniforms stepped out of the car and called
him to show his ID card and place the contents of his pockets on the
car. He handed them his ID card and gave them the documents he had
with him, which included his poems and his college notes. However,
when he refused to let them read his papers, the policemen threw him
to the ground, handcuffed and kicked him, calling him a stinky Gypsy
and a dirty fag. They called on the walkie-talkie an officer whom they
referred to as Major, and who told them to bring him to the police
station of the 10th district. He was further abused and put into the
detention cell for two hours. When he was released and he told the
police officers that he intended to file a complaint against them, he
was kicked again on the stomach and the back, and he was threatened
that he would also be reported for refusing to identify himself.

After being released, around 7 P.M. Sárközi went to the nearest
hospital to dress his wounds and ask for a medical certificate.
However, the hospital's staff claimed that they did not have the
necessary documents and sent him away. He had find another hospital
where they were willing to attend his wounds.

When asked on the telephone, Lukács Kádár, the police chief of the
10th district said that the young man was not arrested by the
policemen of his district, and no policeman reported physical abuse
from the building.

A lawyer has been commissioned to represent the college student by the
Foundation for Romani Civil Rights, said Aladár Horváth, the president
of the foundation.
