World Conference Against Racism - A difficult Prep Com in Geneva
-------------------------------------------------------------------
During the May/June Prep Com (preparatory meeting) for the World
Conference the going was so slow that the meeting had to be prolonged
one week and there will even be an extra meeting.
See reports on http://www.icare.to.

If you want to register to attend the World Conference in South-Africa
and the accompanying NGO Forum, you should do so as soon as possible.
Please take care: there are two procedures, one for the NGO Forum and
one for the intergovernmental conference. You can find more
information on I CARE (Internet Centre Anti-Racism Europe)
http://www.icare.to.
Or try http://www.racism.org.za for the South-African NGO Coordination
(SANGOCO). You have to contact the appropriate organisations, for the
NGO Forum this is SANGOCO, for the WCAR this is the UN WCAR
secretariat. Do not send registration applications to UNITED or I
CARE!
* deadline to register for the NGO forum 30 June
* deadline for accreditation to the WCAR (complicated, check info of
UN!) officially has been closed but this deadline will most likely be
postponed, so send your papers as soon as possible
* registration for WCAR, also for those who are already accredited:
deadline (with form, delegation letter and passport photos of each
person) before 15 July

You can also order posters with information on the World Conference
from UNITED, up to 100 for free. If you need more for special
purposes, contact us.

WORLD CONFERENCE AGAINST RACISM:
IF YOU HAVE ACCREDITATION/REGISTRATION BUT NO MONEY

The United Nations has determined that there will be 350 scholarships
for NGOs who want to attend the World Conference Against Racism, which
will take place 31/8-7/9 in Durban, South Africa, but cannot afford
travel and accommodation.

If you want to apply for a scholarship you need to have
accreditation/registration at the World Conference. There are 70
scholarships for Europe, the rest is for the other continents. You can
find more information and the application form on:
http://www.unhchr.ch/html/racism/05-ngo-cnt.html

The deadline for applications is 15 June 2001!

20 June International Refugee Day
------------------------------------------------------------------
On 4 December 2000 the General Assembly of the United Nations
unanimously adopted a resolution to proclaim 20 June World Refugee
Day. The first such a day coincides with the celebration of the
fiftieth anniversary of the 1951 Geneva Convention on refugees.
UNITED has co-ordinated an international refugee campaign since
several years, which consists of two complimentary parts:

- Promoting a safe environment for refugees and asylum seekers where
they do not have to fear racism and intolerance
- Protesting against the restrictive asylum and migration policies,
that are often referred to as "Fortress Europe": especially focusing
attention on the deaths of already more than 2000 people who tried to
find a safe haven in Europe.

You can now order posters, post cards and stickers and join the
campaign!
An actual list of documented death cases can be found on
 http://www.unitedagainstracism.org

Please help UNITED update this list, by sending newspaper clippings on
cases of people who died trying to reach Europe, committed suicide in
detention centres for foreigners or other deaths related to "Fortress
Europe".
