UC Berkeley. A new book, "Minorities, Mullahs, and Modernity: Reshaping
Community in the Late Soviet Union" by Mark A. Saroyan will be available in
June 1997.  Edited by Edward W. Walker, this collection of essays by the
late Dr. Saroyan (1960-1995) analyzes the interaction between the religious
traditions, ethnic identities, and politics in the former Soviet Union, with
particular emphasis on the role of Islam and on the Caucasus and Central

Demokratizatsiya, the Journal of Post-Soviet Democratization, would like to
have more coverage of the Caucasus in upcoming issues.  For more information

The current issue (No. 94) of the German-Armenian Society's quarterly
"Armenisch-Deutsche Korrespondenz" (ADK) is available.  ADK is published in

Brown University. Larry Minear and Neil MacFarlane have completed a study
entitled "Humanitarian Action and Politics: The Case of Nagorno-Karabakh,"
which was published by the Humanitarianism and War Project of the Thomas J.
Watson Jr. Institute for Inter national Studies.  Copies of the Project's

Oxford, England. The Oxford University Central Asia and Caucasus Society
continues to host a series of lectures on the Caucasus.  On June 3, 1997,
Mark Almond from Oriel College will give a lecture on "Democracy and
Discontent in the Caucasus," and on June 10, 1997, Cecil Ballantine from
Amnesty International will give a lecture on "Human Rights Concern in
