I am pleased to announce the availability on the World Wide Web of  J.
Otto Pohl's article, "The Deportation and Fate of the Crimean
Tatars."  Mr. Pohl delivered this paper at the 5th World Convention of
the Association for the Study of Nationalities, Columbia University,
New York, 13-15 April 2000. The paper describes the deportation
process, the motives behind the Soviet decision, and the conditions in
the settlements camps, supported by statistical information that has
been made available in recent years by the opening of Russian
archives. Mr. Pohl's article may be viewed at ICC's Web site:

An independent scholar, Mr. Pohl has been interested in Soviet
repression and its effect on the various ethnic groups living in the
Soviet Union. He is the author of two books, The Stalinist Penal
System: A Statistical History of Soviet Repression and Terror,
1930-1953 (Jefferson, NC: McFarland, 1997) and Ethnic Cleansing in the
USSR, 1937-1949 (Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 1999). A review of
