Research Opportunities

The Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies is pleased to announce its
second research workshop on "Civil Society and Social Capital in the Former
Soviet Union". The workshop will be organized by Professors Don K. Rowney
and Edward F. McClennen, who co-direct a program in
institutional theory and history at Bowling Green State University, and
Professor Peter J. Stavrakis of the Kennan Institute. Participation in the
workshops is open to U.S. scholars at any level with substantive research
interests in the theory of social capital and its relations to the
development of civil society in the Soviet successor states.

Selection for the September 24-26, 1997 workshop will be based on the
theoretical significance and/or policy relevance of applicants' current
research projects. Junior scholars are especially encouraged to apply. Per
diem costs and some travel support will be provided by the Kennan Institute.
Those interested should submit an abstract of their current research, a
current resume, and two letters of recommendation to: Social Capital
Workshop, The Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies, The Wilson
Center, 370 L'Enfant Promenade, SW, Suite 704, Washington, DC 20024-2518.
Deadline for receipt of applications is August 1, 1997.
