Letter of concern on ethnic collision in Macedonia

Human Rights Project, Bulgaria

L E T T E R OF CONCERN

Puterdo Ilo.

To the attention of International Institutions, Human Rights
activists, and Roma communities

Amalalen,

The Human Rights Project is a non-for-profit and non-governmental
organization for human rights defense of Roma in Bulgaria. Being an
organization that promotes Roma rights, we would like to express our
concern for the Roma in Macedonia and the growing tension there. In
the last few days the news for the intense ethnic conflict in this
neighboring country of ours has brought about anxiety due to the
threat of another bloody ethnic upheaval. For ten years the civil
population from various Balkan regions, with various ethnic and
religious affiliations, have been victims in the wars resulting from
ethnic hatred and hate-speech.

The Human Rights Project would like to remind that the less guilty and
unknown victims of the ethnic hatred and wars in Former Republic of
Yugoslavia were the Roma. Hundreds of thousands of Roma from Bosnia,
Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Kosovo were killed, maltreated, or
chased from the territories they used to live in for centuries. It was
the Roma amidst the war rivals of larger ethnic groups, who were
enemies for all the parties in the conflict.

Today, after freshly remembering the last Balkan nightmare of Kosovo,
the Human Rights Project appeals to anyone who can prevent from future
ethnic collision in Macedonia to do it through civil actions,
diplomacy or dialogue.

We call for the governments of all Balkan states and states members of
the European Union, as well as the international human rights society
and international institutions to take necessary measures and
guarantee that no other ethnic war will happen on the Balkans.

Romalen, rodas o manushibe!
