SWIFTER PROCESSING FOR HOLOCAUST CLAIMS

Hamburg / GERMANY (RNN Agency) May the 1st, 1999

Only 10% of the 10,000-odd claims to research dormant Swiss bank
accounts have so far been processed in the year since the undertaking
began, prompting the legal teams involved to promise speedier action.
5,570 Swiss bank accounts were registered as dormant, some 20% are
thought to be of People killed in the Holocaust. Delays have been
blamed on the complexity of dealing with each case individually.

The situation in Kosovo is getting worse
Increased number of victims and much more refugees in Macedonia
Kumanovo / MACEDONIA (RNN Correspondent) May the 1st, 1999

Kosovo

War strikes on Kosovo enlarged the number of the victims and the
refugees. Many cities in Kosovo and Serbia are in ruins. Though there
were some opposite statements from Vuk Draskovic and Milo Djukanovic
against the policy of Milosevic, the people are expressing their
loyalty. The real and true information are very hard to find.

These days I received information about small number of refugees from
Kosovo who succeeded to flee from the country over the border with
Hungary. The bombings took 3 children and one man (25) the family
Zuljfuri from Prizren, there are Roma victims in Veliki Grljeni
(Valjevo). 5000 refugees arrived in Belgrade and they need help, but I
don't know how it could be done?

Most of the Roma from Kosovo are in the inner parts of Serbia and
Vojvodina but they don't have any protection. The attacks are
intensified today.

Macedonia

Macedonia is in very bad comic position. The number of the refugees is
doubled, but there is no space for them. There is information that
non-tolerance occurred among the refugees in the camps. No matter how
the Macedonian authorities and the NGO are puling and tailing it's not
enough.

Nobody acclaims the efforts of Macedonia. Big number of refugees want
to go to some European countries as quicker as possible. There were
some cases of refugees paying money to the police officers for letting
them out of the camps.

The air traffic is barely functioning, the number of flights is
reduced.

People are hearing loud explosions every day - in Kumanovo, Debar,
Tetovo, Veles, Bogomila (in south Macedonia). More detailed
information are not available. Missiles are falling down in Macedonia
and Bulgaria - Sofija, "OCCASIONALLY". The situation with the Roma
refugees is much more difficult, nobody mentions them. Their
percentage is small compared with the other, but they are here and
they need help, too. The organizations are giving their best. The
hosters of the refugees are seeking urgent help, they can't take it on
their own. The social plight of Roma in Macedonia is well-known. From
the whole Roma population, 99% are unemployed, social cases. Many Roma
wanted to go abroad but there are no flights, they need visas, and
money. The media are talking about Albanians and Serbs, never
mentioning any other ethnic groups.

Some foreign donators are interested in giving help. Though Macedonia
is aside of the war, it is present here. What would have been if this
was happening in some other European country or U.S?

The most important is that this war and the sufferings of people must
stop. We are not sleeping well, frightenned and without hope for
better tomorrow. God bless us all.

P.S.: There was an earthquake 40 km south from Belgrade, but still no
information about victims or wounded. Another two were felt in
Macedonia two days ago.

I just received an information about detonations in different parts of
our country, and air fight in the sky over Skopje and over Krusevo,
small city 100 km far away from the borderline with Kosovo. The local
people saw an airplane falling down in the near mountains. These
information are fresh and more often. People are frightened, beside
the quarantines for peace from NATO.

SAKIC ACCUSED OF SHOOTING

Zagreb / CROATIA (RNN Correspondent) May the 4th, 1999

A witness at the war crimes trial of Dinko Sakic in Zagreb, Croatia,
has told of how he saw the camp commander shoot in cold blood a
prisoner. According to Dervis Sorac, 74, all camp inmates were forced
to watch the summary execution of 18 prisoners as retribution for a
break-out; while most were hanged, Sorac said that he saw Sakic shoot
another inmate in the head three times.

So far in the trial most witnesses have told of the appalling
conditions at the camp and say that they heard of executions carried
out by camp guards at the Save river nearby, but Sorac's is the only
testimony which links Sakic personally to a murder. Sorac also said,
however, that he had a relatively good opinion of Sakic and he had
wondered what this otherwise urbane young man was doing with the
thuggish Ustashe.

ROSE REMINDS BECK OF PROMISES

Heidelberg / GERMANY (RNN Correspondent) May the 7th, 1999

Romani Rose has criticized the state president of Rheinland-Pfalz
(Rhineland-Palatinate), Kurt Beck, for failing to deliver on several
promises and signed agreements which would offer protection and
support to Roma. One of the agreements would have allowed a Roma
representative onto the board of a local radio station and subsequent
broadcasts in Romanes. Germany's state presidents met in the middle of
April to discuss measures
using radio to combat racism.
