                    CALL FOR PAPERS


    DEAR COLLEAGUES !

  It is our pleasure to invite you to participate at the conference "Civil
  society and social rights" held in Yalta, Crimea, Ukraine, on 5-11 October
, 1997.
  The conference is organized by Crimean Research Centre of Humanities, Sim-
  feropol, Ukraine and University for Humanist Studies, Utrecht, the
Netherlands.
  The idea of the conference is to think about future developments of
Central
  and Eastern Europe in the most constructive way. At first intellectuals
  from Central and Eastern Europe will be informed about some theoretical
  insights in western Europian welfare states, citizenship and social rights
..
  Secondly attention will be paid to the future of Central and Eastern Euro-
  pean countries, especially with respect to social rights. After analysing
  some future prospect in general, participants have to think about concrete
  strategies to develop social rightsmore in details; what has to be done in
  the Ukraine and in other Eastern European countries to arrive at a welfare
  regime? These exercises will take place in small working groups with plena
-
  tary presentations of the results afterwards.

              The workshops will be clustered into five sections:
  1. History, Geography, Ecology.
  2. Economics, Politics, Law.
  3. Education, Women's Studies, Sociology.
  4. Literature, Religion, Culture.
  5. Language, Philosophy, Psychology.

   WE PROPOSE TO DISCUSS AT THE CONFERENCE THE NEXT PROBLEMS:

  * The modern theories on civil society, welfare state, citizenship and
social rights;
  * Western Europe: the experience of welfare capitalism;
  * The European Union and social rights;
  * The social consequences of the economical transformation in Central and
Eastern Europe;
  * The constitutional development and social rights in Central and Eastern
Europe;
  * Environmentality and civil society;
  * Gender, Family and social rights;
  * The future of Central and Eastern Europe : capitalism with a human face;
  * Multiculturalism, the rights of minorities and ethnical conflicts;
  * Role of Literature and the Arts in the formation of Civil Society.

    The official languages of the conference will be Russian and English.

  Scholars wishing to present a paper, should send a one-page abstract and
  a short curriculum vitae to the conference secretariat (Marina Borodina)
  before June 1,1997 as well as to the Chair of Scientific Program of the
  conference (Dr.Tatjana Senyushkina). Postal address: see on the blank.

             PUBLICATION OF CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS:

  Fifty per cent of the papers read at the conference will be selected for
  publication in the conference proceedings "Civil Society and Social
Rights".

                          FEES:

  $150.00 registration fee to be paid after arrival.

                       ACCOMODATIONS:

  in Yalta hotels, $25-70 per day including three meals.

                       SIGHTSEEING:

  The conference will be held  at the most famous historical places in the
  Crimea (Livadia Palace which was a residence of the last Russian tsar
  Nikolay II, the place of the "Big Triumvirate" Summit (J.Stalin, F.
Roosevelt,
  W. Churchill) in 1945, Count Vorontsov's Palace in Alupka, Palace of
Russian
  tsar Alexander III in Massandra. We'll offer you the special excursion
  program including a visit to Sebastopol, the city whwre the main base of
the
  Black Sea Fleet is located, tasting of the best Crimean wines at Massandra
  wine plant.

  A registration form and accomodation form will be sent you as soon as your
  abstract has been accepted.
