The Next Step

As you are probably aware, the 54th Session of the United Nations
Human Rights Commission approved the draft Declaration for Protection
of Human Rights Defenders.

The Observatory welcomes this move and is glad to have worked
alongside all those whose actions and support have contributed to this
decisive action; a move long awaited by the many thousands of people
working daily for the cause of human rights.

The Declaration has to be formally adopted by the General Assembly of
the United Nations during its next meeting. We hope that the adoption
of the text will coincide with the celebration by the Assembly on the
10th December of the 50th anniversary of Universal Declaration of
Human Rights.

Despite this positive development, it is vital that we continue to
maintain the pressure: and that human rights defenders use the
Declaration from today.

The Observatory would like to make available to all those who would
like to receive a digital copy of the draft which is available in
English, French and Spanish. The Observatory recommends to all human
rights defenders threatened and victims of repression to take
advantage of this Declaration from now
