ABKHAZ REFUGEES DEMAND THAT PROCURATOR'S OFFICE ASSES ACTIVITY OF
GEORGIAN BOARD OF "RADIO SVOBODA" AND ORGANIZATIONS "FREEDOM
INSTITUTION" AND "GEORGIA AND THE WORLD"

TBILISI, 23 March. /BLACK SEA PRESS/. The League of peoples'
representatives of Abkhaz refugees appealed to the Georgian
Procurator's Office to asses the activities of the organizations
"Freedom Institution", "Georgian and the World" and the Georgian
Bureau of the "Radio Svoboda".

"The procurator's office is to find out who is financing the
organizations, what is their purpose and who is assisting them", -
Boris Kakubava, the chairman of the Coordinating Board of the League
of peoples' representatives of Abkhaz refugees, said at the March 23
press conference. He said that "owing to anti-national activities of
the organizations land are sold to foreigners, the "nationality"
paragraph has been withdrawn from documents, and fascist forums are
organized. He believes that the organizations are financed by foreign
special services.

1. TBILISI SEATED BATUMI ON 242 BOMBS

According to the Adjarian leader Aslan Abashidze's advisor, some time
ago the Adjarian security service detained a van with 242 bombs.
According to official documents, the bombs belonged to the company
"Delta" which was exporting them to one of the Bulgarian military
factories. In the advisor's words, the exports were licensed by the
Georgian Ministry of Justice. He also claimed State Minister Vazha
Lortkipanidze, the National Security Council and some top military
officers to take a hand in the case. Batumi suspects that Tbilisi is
illegally trading with weapons. Niko Lekishvili, former state minister
and current deputy chairman of the Citizens' Union of Georgia is said
to be the president of the "Delta". Shevardnadze has not commented on
the case so far.

1. ONE MORE SHAMEFUL LAWSUIT HELD IN GEORGIA

At yesterday's trial of the case the (Tbilisi-based) Ministry of
Internal Affairs of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia vs. Sozar
Subeliani, editor of the Kavkasioni newspaper, the judge, Samson
Dadiani, sentenced the newspaper to apologise to the ministry, though
without paying the damages. The ministry had brought an action against
Subeliani for his article about its dealings in the Kodori Gorge (the
only Abkhazian territory still under Tbilisi's control). The ministry
demanded a compensation of 10,000 GEL for the insult (the defendant's
lawyer argued that only individuals, not organisations can lodge such
complaints according to the law). However, the Kavkasioni is not going
to fulfil the sentence, considering it illegal.

2. THE ABKHAZ CAPTURED GEORGIAN SAILORS

The Abkhaz arrested the Georgian fishing ship "Alioni" with nine men
aboard far from the Abkhaz coast on April 3. The mayor of Poti
appealed to the Russian Peacekeeping Force in Abkhazia in the hope
that their mediation may help release the seamen.

4. OZGAN WAS WITHIN A HAIRBREADTH OF DEATH

A bomb exploded outside the office of the Gali district administration
of Abkhazia the other day, when Constantine Ozgan, the head of the
Abkhaz state commission for repatriation of refugees and
rehabilitation of the district, was about to leave the building for a
meeting with Georgian refugees. Three people were wounded. Ozgan
blamed the incident on the Georgian party. Tbilisi's only comment was:
the explosion was organised by those forces that are not interested in
a dialogue between the Georgians and the Abkhaz.
