Press release on deportation of Meskhenians from Kuban
There is no place in Kuban for strangers!
Press release of the Union of Georgian Repatriates
The Russian newspaper "Izvestiya" (for March 28, 2002, page 5) has
informed that illegal migrants are deported from Kuban. Last year 6,5
thousand Meskhenians was deported from Krasnodar Krai, in 2002 this
number should be doubled (so is written in the article!). Together
with them will be deported Kurd-yezids and Armenians. On March 27,
2002 the legislative assembly of Krasnodar Krai has received the law
regulating local migration. According to the received documents local
militia since April 1 of the current year should be create filtration
camps.
On April 5, 2002 at 7.35 p.m. in the Tbilisi office of the Union of
Georgian Repatriates massage was telephoned. The representative of
deported Meskhetians spoke from Krymsk of Krasnodar Krai, which name
we for the clear reasons do not disclose. He has informed that till
now only source of the incomes of the majority of Meskhetian families
in Kuban was the crop from rented for mint of money plot of land.
According to a source, the Krasnodar Governor Aleksandr Tkachev has
ordered: in future to not give in rent plots of land to Meskhenians.
All plots of land, that Meskhetians have in rent, should be taken
away from them till the April, 20, 2002. The source informs, that this
discrimination measure is distributed absolute to all Meskhetians,
living in Krasnodar region, despite temporary or constant
registration, even despite the Russian citizenship. " What will our
children eat? " - ask Meskhenians of Kuban, which always lived only by
work.
The Union of Georgian Repatriates asks all to render the help to the
inhabitants of Krasnodar region, which are undergone discrimination to
an ethnic and religious attribute. Your help can be information as
well. And, PLEASE: circulate this message as widely as possible among
human rights and other organizations, which can influence on this
situation.
