Second Stocktaking After Durban: NGO meeting, 22 March

Second Stocktaking After Durban

NGOs in Action

I. Objectives:

The World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia
and Related Intolerance that took place in Durban, South Africa in
September last year recognized the fundamental role of civil society
in the fight against racism. It also encouraged the full
participation of non-governmental organizations in the follow up to
the World Conference.

On 2 January 2002, the High Commissioner for Human Rights established
an interim Anti-Discrimination Unit to implement the Durban
Declaration and Programme of Action; core functions include a NGO
liaison officer whose main responsibility is to encourage the broad
participation of NGOs and civil society in implementing the
commitments made in Durban, directly or indirectly.

To encourage full participation of NGOs to the follow up of Durban,
the Anti-Discrimination Unit has decided to convene a meeting on 22
March 2002, during the 58th session of the Commission on Human Rights.
The objective of the meeting is to allow NGOs to indicate what steps
they have taken to date or are planning, to implement the Declaration
and Programme of Action of the World Conference. NGOs are encouraged
to briefly indicate at that meeting any such initiatives.
