Topic: Greek Helsinki Monitor reports on the various dimensions of the
Kosovo crisis given by the Greek press.

Apart from the very little "vague" presentation of the "warning
signals" of the crisis in Kosovo, the main interest of the Greek
press, regarding this particular area of the Balkans comes much later,
when the first "bloody" incidents took place. Generally, one would say
that the Greek press tries to keep things between the lines, which, in
this case, means that human rights are, in fact, put aside. The
sensitivity over minority issues, once more, has been "activated". The
Greek press is using the word "Albanian-speaking population" rather
than merely "Albanians", an attitude which seems to be related to the
well known "syndromes" of "minoritophobia" in Greece. It is well known
that Greece does not officially recognize the existence of national
minorities on Greek territory. Even the Turkish minority is recognized
on a religious basis, let alone the Macedonian one, which is a phantom
- minority by official Greek standards. The term "Albanian-speaking
population" insinuates that the minority of Albanians (in fact a
majority in Kosovo) is not a national minority in Serbia, indirectly
meaning that this particular group is not entitled to demand rights by
putting a sovereign state (Serbia) into such trouble.
