'Dialogue': Center for relgious tolerance in South Kazakhstan

Dear Colleagues,

NGO "Dialogue" from Chimkent, South Kazakstan in cooperation with
local scholars, teachers and community activists is looking for
collaboration and financial support for creating special center for
religious tolerance populatization among population in South
Kazakstan, region with multiethnic demography and frontiers between
Kazakstan and Uzbekistan.

See below short description of project.

In summer of 2000 the aggravation of geopolitical situation on the
frontier of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, elucidating and interpreted
contradictorily in mass media, according to the hostilities of radical
Uzbek opposition under the flag of Islamic extremism, recalled the
sharp troubles among the population and was ready to be repeated on
the new velapse of collision in summer-spring of 2001.

The population of Kazakhstan (as its CIS neighbors) finds out general
religious illiteracy because of absence from the true information
about the religion in soviet period for a long time. The unknowledge
in fundamental points of doctrine of main world religions (either new
or traditional) gives rise to religious intolerance, unjustified
mutual aggression and conflict in relations not only between the
confessions, but between the peoples. The same reality greatly
complicates not only cultural collaboration and mutual penetration of
ethnic population groups, but actually stops the forming of healthy
modern civil society in Kazakhstan. This problem occupies the wide
aspects of many-sided interests of whole Central Asian region, as the
religious illiteracy allows the extremism to be spreaded under the
religious slogans among the regional population.

In consequence of this situation, our initiative group, uniting
scientists, mass media, NGO, representatives of force structures,
considers that is necessary and timely to carry out the complex
measures for creating the compact and permanently working, effective
system of religious enlightenment. This system should promote the
humanization of public relations, confirmation of religious tolerance
in the society, mutual penetration of cultures and according to this
base - the consolidation of all citizens of Kazakhstan. In the
capacity of practical action we propose to your attention the project
which focused on the creation of special center for religious
tolerance through combination approachs from Mass media, teaching, NGO
roots activity and mutual form. Interested people are welcome to learn
more details about this project.
