Crimean Tatars and Meskhetian Turks

Dear Friends,

Following the discussion about the Meskhetian Turks I would like
to say that there are also some similarities between the Crimean
Tatars and the Meskhetian Turks.

Especially, in question of the behavior towards migrants of the
local population in the beginning of repatriation. Crimean Tatars
also were met by local population with hostility. This hostility was
derived also from "political games" and partly from historical
sentiments. In 1970s when the first wave of Crimean Tatars came
to Crimea - the local population arranged meetings and
demonstrations against our coming.

In 1990s the term "ponayekhali" is very well known for Crimean
Tatars. Additional Crimean Tatar repatriation were held in time of
the extreme economic and social crisis and local population
blamed Crimean Tatars of the declining economy, high
unempolyment etc.

And now situation did not change too much. Of course many of the
Crimean population (also with the help of the "promotion" campaign
held by Crimean Tatar Mejlis) now accept that Crimean Tatars have
the full right for their native land, but some conservative classes are
still hostile. I cannot imagine when time will come when ethnic
Russians will vote for Crimean Tatar candidate.

Best,

Kurtmolla
