TRIAL OF SUSPECTED BOMBER THIS FEBRUARY IN AUSTRIA
Vienna / AUSTRIA (RNN Correspondent) February 12th, 1999

On Thusday a criminal court in the south Austrian town of Graz
detailed the accusations against 49 year-old Franz Fuchs, suspected of
carrying out bomb attacks. He is charged with murdering four Roma, two
attempted murders and twenty-one cases of grievous bodily harm. The
trial starts on February 2nd. Nicknamed "Bomb Brains", Fuchs is held
responsible for the worst wave of bombings in Austria since the war.
Among the crimes were twenty-five letterbombs made between December
1993 and December 1995 for the xenophobic "Bavarian Freedom Army"
(BFA). Ten people were injured, some seriously, in the blasts which
killed four Roma. The best-known victim was the then mayor of Vienna,
Helmut Zilk, whose hand was mutilated by a letterbomb. The prosecution
holds Fuchs to be the sole person reponsible; the accused maintains
that he was merely the deliverer of the BFA's bombs and denies any
other guilt.

In July 1995 a letterbomb was sent to the black Austrian t.v.
presenter Arabella Kiesbauer (working for the German channel Pro 7);
the bomb exploded in the station's studios in Munich, injuring an
assistant in the face. A few days later another letter from Austria
exploded in the town hall of the north German city of Luebeck, badly
injuring the Social Democrat politician Thomas Rother.

It is thought that Fuchs might refuse to testify during the
sensational trial, forcing the prosecution to rely on forensic
evidence. The man, described as solitary, was discovered more by
chance on October 1st 1997 despite an intensive search: at a border
crossing to Slovenia near his home town of Gralla a bomb he was
holding went off, causing him to lose both arms from the elbow down.

CZECH MINISTER THREATENS CANADA VISA RETALIATIONS

Prague / CZECH REP. (RNN Agency) February 15th, 1999

Canada's visa requirements for visiting Czechs may prompt retalliation
from Prague, according to the Czech foreign minister. Restrictions
were reimposed after a wave of mostly Roma refugees in 1997 (RNN
reported); Prague accepts that its treatment of Roma at home caused
the problem and did not challenge the Canadian decision at the time.
Asylum applicants numbered 1,500 in 1997 but subsequently 150 in 1998.
Canada's immigration authorities say that they will look into the
matter; the root cause - discrimination within the Czech Republic - is
a sore spot in Prague.

CROATIA TRIAL SOON FOR FACIST DEATH CAMP CHIEF

Zagreb / CROATIA (RNN Correpondent) February 16th , 1999

WWII camp commander Dinko Sakic, a Croat, will be placed on trial on
Tuesday, according to a Croatian judge. Sakic was extradited from
Argentina with his wife in June upon evidence from 46 witnesses. He is
implicated in crimes in the camps at Jasenovac and Stara Gradiska
between 1942 and 1945, including the murder of 2,000 camp inmates. The
trial is seen as a chance for Croatia to face up to the activities of
the Nazi-supporting Ustacha regimes during WWII, which murdered
thousands of Serbs, Jews, Roma and political prisoners.
