Vilnius Polish community to have center

Vilnius Polish community to have center

VILNIUS, Feb 12, BNS - A Polish Cultural Center will be opened in
Vilnius on Sunday.

Director Marek Pakula said in a press release the function of the
center is to present and popularize Polish culture in Lithuania, and
to expand cultural cooperation between the two nations.

The press release said the hope is the center will become a place for
people of various nationalities to meet and make personal and
professional contact.

The chair of the Polish Senate, Alicija Grzeszkowiak, will preside at
the opening ceremony.

The association Wspolnota Polska, which supports Poles living beyond
the borders of the homeland, initiated construction of the center.

The charity organization Polish Cultural Center in Vilnius,
established by Wspolnota Polska, will jointly administer the center
with the Polish Union of Lithuania.

Construction of the modern building at the intersection of Naugardukas
and Kaunas streets in Vilnius took two and a half years to complete.
It has a large exhibition space, 600-seat conference and events hall,
commercial space and 23 office and 20 hotel rooms.

Currently there are 30 Polish organizations based in the building.

Polish centers have been established around the world where there are
large Polish communities. Such centers exist in the southern
Lithuanian towns of Druskininkai and Eisiskes.

There are plans to erect another in the town of Pabrade, about 60
kilometers to the northeast of Vilnius along the border with Belarus.

The Polish press reported the building in Vilnius cost 5 million USD
to build and is the largest Polish investment in such a project
abroad.
