Enlargement: Nationalism in the candidate countries
Brussels 31/1/02 by Eva Blässar

A round table discussion on nationalism was held yesterday in the
European Parliament in Brussels. Target group for the debate were
minorities within the EU candidate countries, mainly Eastern and
Southeastern Europe. Several different views were expressed. 'The
problem in Eastern Europe is that minorities don't feel at home within
their own state administration, and nationality is therefore very hard
to measure - when asked, people don't necessarily say what's on their
passport, they say what nationality they feel like they are,' said
Pierre Kende, sociologist and political essayist, trying to explain
that the concept of nationality and nationalism is quite different in
Eastern Europe.
