ANNOTATED DAILY HEADLINES OF THE GEORGIAN PRESS

Compiled by the Caucasian Institute for Peace, Democracy and
Development (CIPDD)

Text: Tamara Shamil
English version: Guram Dumbadze
Editor: Emil Adelkhanov-Steinberg

FROM NOW ON CHILDREN WILL BE BORN WITHOUT ETHNICITY IN GEORGIA

Not everyone is content with the amendments to the current legislation
that have come into force today: ethnicity will be no longer indicated
in our IDs and birth certificates. Guram Sharadze, the chairman of the
parliamentary migration committee, is especially angered: the new law,
in his opinion, deprives the Georgians of the possibility to regulate
the country's demographic situation and violates their rights.
Georgia, in his words, became a "test ground for cosmopolitanism".
Sharadze demands to suspend the amendments until the spring
parliamentary session and impeach Justice Minister Lado Chanturia as
their author, though they were brought in by the President.

GURAM MAMULIA: ETHNICITY IN IDs MAY TRIGGER SEPARATISM

The chairman of the parliamentary migration committee Guram Sharadze's
campaign against the abolishment of ethnicity item in the Georgian ID
may impede the country's development into a coherent state, Guram
Mamulia, the chairman of the Repatriation Service, argues. In his
opinion, if the President gives way to Sharadze's demands and resolves
on respective amendments to the law, separatism may increase in the
ethnic enclaves of Georgia.
