MAYOR CALLS RACISTS TO THE PARTICIPANTS IN A DEMONSTRATION AGAINST ROMA

The Mayor of Alcala del Rio, Jose Chamorro, has called racists to the
participants in two demonstrations that early in december occurred in this
town near Seville, in the south of Spain, so as to protest for the possible
arrival of some Roma families.

According to Chamorro, "it is the same situation of last year in these dates
, when in Alcala appeared some rumours about the arrival of Roma families
from Seville, rumour that finally was shown as totally false.

The Diputation of Seville has recently signed up an agreement with the
Spanish Romani Union in order to improve the situation of the Roma who live
in five towns of the province, Alcala among them. The main aim of this plan
is to enrol romani children into school and to improve also the level of
employment of their parents. "Some people from Alcala have confused this
plan and the arrival to Alcala of new Roma families", as Chamorro assured
to a local newspaper.

In view of this rumours, the Town Council of Alcala sent a comunicate to all
the neighbours denying "false rumours about the relationship between the
possible arrival of Roma families and the signature of the agreement with
the Roma Union". "It seems to be a dark hand interested in creating a
conflict in the town. It is sad because meanwhile, in other parts, racism is
seriously combated here, in Alcala, there are people who show racist
attitudes", Chamorro said.

Central Council of the Sinti submits complaints to the Press Committee

The Central Council of the Sinti and Roma has sent in complaints against 47
newspaper articles of the past 12 months to the German Press Committee in
Bonn. According to the Central Council on Monday all these articles
designating culprits as Sinti, Roma, gypsies or other synonyms have
infringed the guidelines of the Press Committee which, however, does not
bother about the observance of these guidelines. Because of the non
functioning self control of many media the Central Council wants to achieve
a ban on discirimination accepted in the press laws of the federal states
and in the civil servant law.

The Central Council complains that in almost all these cases the police,
legal and other authorities were the triggers of a prejudice-fomenting
designation. The description of culprits as Sinti or similar terms agrees
with the spirit of the decree issued in the year 1935 by the minister of the
interior of the Third Reich. This decree stipulated that "in all reports to
the press about criminial offences of Jews the racial affiliation has to be
emphasized".

The Central Council criticized the fact that out of 34 complaints of the
past year given to the Press Committee only in 5 cases the designation as
Sinti or Roma was condemned as an act of offence against the guidelines of
the Press Committee.
