Romanian Roma face "discrimination and police brutality", say Council
of Europe experts

Strasbourg, 10.01.2002 - Romania needs to make more efforts to improve
the situation of its national minorities including the Roma people,
Council of Europe experts revealed.

The report - adopted by the Advisory Committee on the Framework
Convention for the Protection of National Minorities - condemns
extensive discrimination against the Roma community, and criticises
the unsatisfactory status of the Roma community in the education
system as well as the persistence of cases of police brutality.

The experts praise the Romanian authorities for actions aimed at
promoting national minorities in general - such as the right to
parliamentary representation, the creation of a Council of National
Minorities and the recent adoption of important legal guarantees. 
But, they say more work is needed to change media attitudes and to
develop minority radio and television programmes, as well as to
improve job opportunities for minorities in the public sector.

The report - adopted in April last year - has been made public
following a decision of the Romanian authorities.
