Switzerland prolongates the duration of residence for Roma from Kosovo
until May 2000

The 500 Roma from Kosovo who fled to Switzerland in the beginning of
1999 are allowed to stay until May 31, 2000. At the beginning they
were to leave Switzerland on January 1st,2000. Urs Hadorn, Kosovo
special agent, said that the Roma are in extreme danger in Kosovo. He
emphasized that none of the 500 Roma who have asked for asylum since
January was sent back.
Sinti demand to fight racism

The Union of the Sinti and Roma is shocked by the fact that a private
gentleman has been attacked because of his intention to sell his house
(the former pub "Goldener Adler") in Helsa to a Sinti family. The
union urges
all parties, the parish, and other social organizations to fight this
racism.
Anonymous persons had threatened not only the house owner but also the
local government. They announced to burn down the house if it would be
sold to the Sinti. The question is: Would they have burnt it down, if
the Sinti family would have already lived in it?
Each approach to a better understanding with minorities is being
stopped by prejudices like this in Helsa, said Adam Strau�, chairman
of the Union of German Sinti and Roma. He reminds of fighting the very
beginning of
prejudices and racism to protect democracy.
