CINTI LODGE COMPLAINTS ABOUT DISCRIMINATION
Heidelberg / GERMANY (RNN Correspondent) January the 6th 1999
The Central Council of German Roma and Cinti has lodged a complaint
with the German Press Council, claiming that many newspaper crime
stories lay emphasis on the fact that the accused belong to the Roma
community. The Central Council sent the Press Council 32 newspaper
articles from the past 12 months, articles which explicitly describe
the suspects as Roma or Cinti. According to Romani Rose, head of the
Central Council, Roma feel that this pigeonholing runs against the
Press Council's own guidelines (described from the beginning as
inadequate) and merely leads to prejudices being strengthened. Rose
points out similarities to the National Socialist Interior Ministry's
1935 decree: if someone Jewish committed a crime then this had to be
explicitly stated in any reports about the crime.
ROMA TO MOVE WITH MONEY FROM BRUSSELS
Berlin / GERMANY ( RNN Agency ) January the 8th 1999
In a decision made by the Senate, 1,200 Roma living in Berlin are to
receive money from Brussels to rebuilt their houses in their home
country. Each family is to get upto DM 20,000. The Berlin state will
save 1.5 million marks a month in social security claims. The 6.6
million mark needed for this move comes in the form of a loan from the
Council of Europe's bank and from an EU fund.
